The SAG Awards which took place before the Oscar can be changing conditions of the nominees in the Best Picture.
The thing is that all eight Oscar nominees had at least one nomination at the SAG awards. Back on Sunday night, the nomination indeed vouched for the good potential of the particular films to get nominated at the Oscar Best Picture as well.
As usual, the SAG can be the benchmark to raise the bar for the films which get the nominations. That’s why there are always changes whenever the SAG takes place. So, what films are going up, and what is going down? And what film is about the same as the past performance? Let’s just go straight to the films.
Who’s going up?
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” comes up as the film that increases its potential to get the Best Picture. Although what this film achieved does not necessarily dictate how the Oscars will go, there are 12 of the last 25 SAG has the same winners.
SAG is not the only one to see the film’s worthiness. There are also other awards like Golden Globe, Writers Guild, Critics Choice, as well as Producers Guild Awards. You know what happened just recently when the dark horse rose to shock the world. Yes, I am talking about the Parasite film.
Who’s going down?
I am not sure if “The Father” is going to win the acting nominations. However, Anthony Hopkins does have the caliber to win the awards. He will be competing with the late Chadwick Boseman. The odds on favorite title to win is “Promising Young Woman”. Carey Mulligan lost to Viola Davis.
After the PGA and SAG award, there could be an Oscar race between Nomadland, Trial of the Chicago, and The Father.
Not going up or down
Judas and the Black Messiah won its only nomination in the SAG for the supporting actor Daniel Kaluuya. Not only that. Daniel Kaluuya will also reserve the place for the front-runner of the Oscars. Judas is indeed still not peaked as the Best Picture nomination. But who knows how the ball rolls at the upcoming Oscars?
Gary Oldman was the only nominee at the SAG Awards for the Mank film. He lost to Boseman. However, we shouldn’t take a conclusion too quickly because Oscars voters are not yet there.
