2022 Oscars Best Picture: Our Predictions & Ranking

Oscar Best Picture 2022

In 2021-2022, the studios produced their best work for the big screen. The box office isn’t what it used to be, and short-lived films don’t have the same cultural influence. Costly films that were first shown in theaters before being made available on the internet were promoted by both the films’ creators and distributors. In your opinion, does this make “Dune” any less significant? Eight Academy Award nominations have been made for the picture, according to the reports.

The worldwide box office for “Dune” (Warner Bros./HBO Max) was $398 million. Twelve Best Actor in a Supporting Role nominations went to Benedict Cumberbatch for his role as a Montana rancher in Netflix’s The Power of the Dog (December 24). The award for Best Director went to Jane Campion.

“Yes,” Steven Spielberg said when asked if he was optimistic about the upcoming switchover of the Oscar broadcast.

Right now, here’s our best guess at where things stand as we begin the second leg of award season, sorted from least to most probable contenders. The list below could be objective but will give you big picture of what to expect in the nominees.

Our Ranking:

  1. Belfast
  2. Don’t Look Up
  3. CODA
  4. King Richard
  5. Nightmare Alley
  6. West Side Story
  7. Dune
  8. The Power of the Dog
  9. Licorice Pizza
  10. Drive My Car

Nightmare Alley

The nomination means a lot to many fans. After receiving lukewarm critical reception and a lackluster box office haul following its 2017 release, Guillermo del Toro’s noir adaptation won Best Picture at the Oscars, shocking many people who had expected it to lose. This year’s Best Picture nominees include Nightmare Alley, Ford v Ferrari, Black Panther, Selma, and War Horse. Your chances of taking home any creative prizes are little to none, so go ahead and enter.

Drive My Car

Drive My Car has been nominated for Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and International Film in the same four categories as Parasite two years ago. Consequently, there’s no need to throw a massive party or bemoan the Oscars’ departure from Hollywood because Parasite has already been nominated for Editing and Production Design. Drive My Car does not come with these kinds of perks. If Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s film is to succeed despite the lack of guild recognition, it will require the help of moviegoers.

CODA

CODA transports us to a period when Sundance humor was as ubiquitous as the Miramax logo and the name of Anthony Minghella. Because the picture is an emotional rollercoaster, it should fare well at the box office.

Don’t Look Up

Due to our disparate fan bases, we seldom get along. The most pessimistic about Don’t Look Up winning an Academy Award are those who dislike the picture and feel that it is God’s punishment for the world’s crimes. Permit me to provide some solace to yours truly, Alison Willmore: Adam McKay’s film would have won accolades for acting and directing.

Licorice Pizza

No awards were given to Bradley Cooper or Alana Haim’s performances in Licorice Pizza, one of four films up for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay nominations.

Dune

Denis Villeneuve’s Best Director miss was the most surprising Oscar snub this side of Patrizia Reggiani. Even so, Dune still wound up second in total nominations to Power of the Dog. Could that Director snub rally support around Dune, as we previously saw with Argo and Green Book? It’s possible, but the more plausible Oscar precedent is Lord of the Rings, which didn’t haul until its final installment.

Belfast

Despite the fact that Telluride has gone, Belfast and Power of the Dog have remained in contention. POTD received the most Oscar nominations. Belfast’s exclusion from the Editing and Cinematography categories broke the tie. Belfast is a potential choice for individuals who do not choose to travel with the austere, slow-paced Dog.

King Richard

Is King Richard able to compete outside of Best Actor? The sports biography didn’t lose a beat, even making it into the Editing category, which has historically been a Best Picture predictor. Because it is so widely accessible, Team Richard has kept its biggest weapons for phase two, putting Venus and Serena front and center on the campaign tour.

West Side Story

Best director was awarded to Steven Spielberg. In this film, Tony Kushner penned the screenplay. When it comes to supporting actress, Ariana DeBose is the front-runner. WSS fans may have made up a significant portion of the BAFTA jury. It has a significant audience, but the industry as a whole hasn’t been as enthused about the show. Is Disney+ and HBO Max going to expand the cult’s membership?

The Power of the Dog

For his role in The Power of the Dog, Jesse Plemons was unexpectedly nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Competitors will be more confident in their abilities if they are aware of this information. Netflix has its detractors, as every company does. However brilliant, Dog does not have the emotional effect of a more lifelike image. What happened to Nomadland and Parasite, too?
